Tooth Extraction

What is a Tooth Extraction?

An extraction is typically done when no other treatment is available to save a tooth. The tooth may be posing a problem to your oral health because it is either impacted or needs to be removed for other treatment. The procedure involves completely removing the tooth from the mouth. We ensure that all extractions are done in a safe and comfortable manner, and we offer many different sedative options for you to choose before the procedure is done.

Why is a Tooth Extraction needed?

We do our very best to help save and restore your natural teeth. Unfortunately, there may come a time when one or more teeth is beyond the point of being saved. Some of the reasons you’d need an extraction include:

  • You have gum disease and loose, decayed teeth
  • A tooth has broken or cracked far below the gum line
  • You have a problematic wisdom tooth
  • You want to avoid the trouble or expense of other treatments
  • Your child has a stubborn baby tooth

Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?

To determine if you need an extraction, we will perform an examination. This exam looks for any problematic teeth, and we may take x-rays to help in further identifying an issue. If you need to have an extraction done, it is important to consider treatment as soon as possible to prevent further problems from developing. We are able to perform extractions on patients of all ages, including children.

What happens during a Tooth Extraction?

The procedure begins with anesthetic or sedation of your choosing. We then work to loosen and lift the tooth from the mouth using specialized tools. The process is repeated if multiple teeth need to be extracted. We may place sutures through the gums to help them to heal completely. You’ll bite down on a clean piece of gauze to stop any bleeding before leaving the office. It is important that you follow all instructions that we give you concerning follow-up care to prevent problems or an infection.
