Dental Exams & Cleanings
What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?
Both exams and cleanings are a critical part of taking care of your smile and mouth. Even if you brush and floss properly and feel that you don’t have any active problems occurring, it is still important to make time for twice-a-year dental appointments. Cleanings help to clear away hardened plaque (tartar) from all surfaces of your teeth while the exam is helpful in identifying problems before they can get worse. Each member of your family can benefit from this type of preventative care.
Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?
Unfortunately, even with the best toothbrush and brushing techniques, tartar can still form around different areas of the mouth. Tartar is simply hardened plaque that turns into a hard, chalky substance. It’s nearly impossible to remove tartar safely on your own, but a cleaning can be done to help remove it completely. Exams are necessary to find minor issues before they get worse.
How often should Dental Exams & Cleanings be done?
It is recommended that you come into the office every six months for a checkup appointment. These checkup appointments involve a comprehensive examination, oral cancer screening and professional cleaning. The cleaning is performed by a dental hygienist who helps to keep your teeth bright, healthy and clean. It’s never too early to get your children in for their first appointment, and it’s never too late to take control of your oral health.
What happens during Dental Exams & Cleanings?
The procedure begins with a cleaning. The cleaning is performed by our dental hygienist who uses special tools, known as scalers, to clear away all tartar and stains from the teeth. The gums are then checked for signs of both gingivitis and gum disease. Once the cleaning is complete, the exam is performed to look for areas of decay, problem restorations and even oral cancer. The entire procedure takes less than an hour and can be fitted easily into your schedule.
